You have a business in Detroit. You have a website. But when you search for what you do on Google, you are nowhere to be found. Not on page one. Not on page two. Maybe not at all. That is frustrating, especially when you see competitors sitting right at the top.
The good news is that there is usually a clear reason why. And once you know the reason, you can fix it. Let us go through the most common problems.
The 7 Most Common Reasons
| Problem | How Common | Difficulty to Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Your site is brand new | Very common | Easy (just takes time) |
| Google has not indexed your pages | Common | Easy |
| No SEO was done on your site | Very common | Medium |
| Your content is too thin | Common | Medium |
| Your site is slow | Common | Medium |
| No backlinks | Very common | Medium to Hard |
| Google penalized your site | Rare | Hard |
1. Your Website Is Too New
Google does not trust brand new websites right away. A new website needs time to build trust, and that usually takes three to six months of consistent effort. Focus on building a solid foundation with good content, a proper Google Business Profile, and correct business information across the web.
2. Google Has Not Found Your Pages
Sometimes Google simply does not know your pages exist. This happens when your site does not have a sitemap, when pages are blocked by your robots.txt file, or when there are no links pointing to your pages. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console. That is a free tool from Google and it takes about ten minutes to set up. It is one of the most basic technical SEO tasks.
3. Your Pages Are Not Optimized
Having a website is not enough. Each page needs to be optimized so Google understands what it is about. That means having the right keywords in your title tag, description, headings, and content. This is where on-page SEO comes in. Every page on your site should target a specific keyword or topic.
4. Your Content Is Too Thin
If your service pages have just two or three sentences on them, Google does not have enough to work with. A page with 100 words cannot compete with a page that has 1,000 words of useful information. The content needs to be useful. Answer the questions your customers actually ask. Explain your process. Talk about pricing. Cover the areas you serve.
5. Your Site Is Slow
Speed matters. A lot. Google has said publicly that page speed is a ranking factor. If your site takes more than three seconds to load, you are losing visitors and rankings.
Common speed killers include large images, cheap hosting, too many plugins, and old code. A proper SEO audit will find these issues fast.
6. You Have No Backlinks
Backlinks are links from other websites that point to yours. Google sees these as votes of confidence. Without any backlinks, it is very hard to rank for competitive keywords. Building backlinks takes time, but getting listed in Detroit business directories, getting mentioned in local news, and building partnerships with other local businesses are all good ways to earn links.
7. Google Penalized Your Site
This is the worst case scenario and the least common. Google penalties happen when someone uses shady SEO tricks. If your site got penalized, you will see a notice in Google Search Console. If you are in this situation, get in touch with us and we can help.
